Basic of Nano Technology


Dr. Sangshetty Kalyane is an Asso. Professor in Applied Science & Humanity Dept. Bheemanna Khandre Institute of Technology, Bhalki. (KA) since last twenty four years. He has completed M.Sc. in 1993 and completed Ph.D. in 2007 from Gulbarga University and his areas of interest are material science, microwave signals & nano science. He has also carrying VGST research project on Centre of excellence polymer science and technology. Published 53 International journal papers.



This text book presents a basic scope of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, focusing on key essentials, origin of nanotechnology, definition of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and delivers simple examples of applications in various fields. The textbook is relevant academically for undergraduate and graduate students in majors such as Chemical Engineering, Material Science, Electrical Engineering, Bioengineering, Nanoscience, since it would assist in understanding the main concepts of nanotechnology.

The structure of the materials/matters can be controlled at nano level by Nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is a emerging technology to produce novel materials and devices that have useful and unique properties in nano size. Many of the techniques have limited control of structure at the nanometer scale which are already producing useful products. They are also being further developed to produce even more sophisticated products in which the structure of matter is more precisely controlled.

Nanotechnology could also be defined as the study of manipulating matter on the atomic and molecular scale. Nanotechnology has become in recent years a popular and well-accepted term and a central pillar in many nationally funded research programs. The potential strength of nanotechnology is due to the fact that engineering materials and devices at the nanoscale implies not only the manipulation of the individual atoms and molecules to arrange them, forming bulk macroscopic bodies (bottom-up approach), but it also implies the possibility to analyze and evaluate matter at the nanolevel.

The book is divided into 4 chapters. The first chapter is an Introduction to Nanoscience and Nanotechnologies includes origin of Nanotechnology, Definition of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, classification and some properties of nano materials. The second chapter is ―Methods of synthesis of Nanomaterials‖ includes Physical methods to synthesis of Nanomaterials and evaporation techniques. Third chapter of this book is ―Techniques for Materials Characterization includes characterization techniques like spectroscopy techniques, fluorescence techniques SEM, TEM, AFM, IR, UV and NMR techniques. Fourth chapter of this book is ―Carbon nanostructures‖ includes allotropes of carbon and structure, production and properties of carbon nanotubes.

I hope this collection of articles serves the reader, as a concise and useful summary of Nanoscience and nanotechnology, and that it functions as a useful referencing tool to highlight the various outstanding challenges to guide future research.
